10 outdated storage ideas that you think look nice but make your home look messy

A PRO organiser has shared the reason why storage organisers don’t always make your home less messy.

Actually storage organisers can do more harm than good, making things difficult to access and maintain.

Caroline Winkler shared her tips in a YouTube video online.

She said: “Don't get me wrong I find this brand of medical grade pantry organisation to be just as sexually satisfying as the next guy. However this brand of home organisation is never going to give you an organised home.”

“The problem isn't that your M&M’s aren't colour coded. The problem is that we all have a ton of stuff and we don't know how to get rid of it and we don't know how to arrange the things we actually keep.”

Caroline explains most home organisers tell you to spend a lot of money on storage containers that are often a waste of money and hard to get to. So she shared 10 tricks that will help you organise your home the right way.

Tip number one is coral organising.

Caroline says: “If you're looking at your nightstand or your kitchen counter and you're like it's just a lot of stuff it's visually busy coral it just place things on a tray it will blow your mind at how quickly it solves the problem of visual declutter.”

You can do this with several rooms in your house and it makes it easier to clean surfaces.

Next is using velvet hangers.

Caroline explains: “Buy the velvet hangers it's an investment you invest once you keep them forever and yes it's nice to just get all one kind of hanger in your closet that's already like the visual declutter satisfying you'll feel a little bit high.”

The velvet hangers will keep your clothes from falling off and give your wardrobe a more uniformed look.

Caroline's third tip is creating intention drop zones. For this trick you create a designated space for the items you need to access a lot.

She says: “Where are the keys going, where's the coat going, where's the bag going? Sounds simple enough but the way you create these drop zones is extremely important and that gets us into home organisation requirement number three ease of maintenance.”

Tip number four is a using tier rotatable storage organiser.

Caroline says: “This product gets us into organisation principle number two ease of access.

"Yes, we want to visually declutter and we want to find a place for everything. We want everything to have a place but if that item cannot be easily accessed when you need it then it's never going to go back there.”

The organiser's fifth tip is creating passive zones.

This could be a space room or a box you rarely ever use. Caroline explains you should only put passive items in passive zones and active items in active zones.

Next Caroline recommends you maximise awkward spaces in your home, this could be putting up hooks or creating small drawers.

The pro organiser says she usually prefers closed storage to open storage as it’s more fit for purpose.

Tip number eight is to swap clear containers for storage shoe boxes as they will do the exact same thing.

She said: “You do want to subdivide it will make a world of difference especially in those really cluttered storage areas where you gotta keep a ton of stuff.”

Caroline says you should be decluttering often. She says you should be able to clean a room in 15 minutes, if you can’t then you need to get rid of stuff.

Lastly Caroline shared a tip for what to do if you don’t know what you should get rid of.

She said: “ A different tip that helps me when deciding what to keep and what to get rid of is asking if this item was covered in red wine, how hard would I work to save it?”
